NCE Oslo Cancer Cluster

From cancer research to cure

Oslo Cancer Cluster is an exiting new biotechnology cluster solely focused on developing new cancer treatments and diagnostics for the benefit of cancer patients all over the world.
Oslo Cancer Cluster is a Norwegian Centre of Expertise (NCE) integrating members from the life science industry, research institutions, university hospitals, govern-ment and the Norwegian Cancer Society. The aims of the cluster are to accelerate the develop-ment of innovative cancer diagnostics and treatments, and to ensure that patients get access to the new treatments developed. Every day in Norway 66 people are diagnosed with cancer  - with a current treatment success rate of 50%. Oslo Cancer Cluster aims to raise this significantly to ensure that more people live longer, dying not of their cancer but - with managed and under control.

Oslo Cancer Cluster Innovation Park
Oslo Cancer Cluster will build its own Innovation Park in Oslo right next to the Radium Hospital. Unlike other innovation parks, ours will include a fully integrated high school as well as companies, research facilities and parts of the Radium Hospital. In September 2008 Oslo Cancer Cluster signed an agreement with the Council of Oslo to build the park, and it will be up and running in August 2012.

Translational research
The purpose of Oslo Cancer Cluster is to support and accelerate translational research, and give patients access to better can-cer diagnostics and therapies. We want to be instrumental in moving scientific progress from the world-class research performed inside the cluster companies and supporting university hospitals - and out into the world market.

Long tradition for excellent cancer research
Oslo Cancer Cluster is a natural regional cluster, where the interaction between members in the Oslo region provides ideal condi-tions for major synergy. The cluster was established in 2006 as a result of more than 80 years of excellent cancer-related activities in the region, and in June 2007 Oslo Cancer Cluster was awarded NCE (Norwegian Centres of Expertise) status by the Norwegian Government.

70 % resources
Oslo Cancer Cluster comprises about 40 members, including industrial companies, academic research institutions, health initia-tives and support groups in the field of biotechnology – all with their main focus on cancer. Two Technology Transfer Offices and R&D facilitators in the Oslo region are also listed as members. Together these institutions represent more than 70% of the human resources in cancer research in Norway.

Initiatives & Projects
Oslo Cancer Cluster has an impressive 40 projects in the pipeline. It aims to convert research into innovative cancer treatment by:

- Completing development projects between university/hospital/business
- Removing obstacles to cooperation, developing a common R&D platform and ensuring the optimal use of R&D resources within the cluster
- Supporting the development of ideas into new products and commercial enterprises
- Strengthening the training, education, specialization and availability of competent personnel in science, life sciences and medicine
